Book Review: 'The Marriage Box,' A Novel by Corie Adjmi

When Casey Cohen was living in the New Orleans, she was not very good in her studies. When she thought the reason behind her average academic performance, one clue pointed towards her mother whom she hadn't bothered about her down sliding of grades. She had studied in Franklin Prep for sixteen years.

Casey had a mark on skin of her stomach, she disliked wearing attire that revealed it before anyone. Her father often called her by name Cassandra. One day Casey embarrassed before her headmaster at high school when her dad arrived to pick her from school in prominent attire riding in uncommon bike color. In front of their house, a magnolia tree had and her father owned a black Cadillac car.

Day by day the activities of Casey surpassed against the expectation of her parents, they decided to relocate to their old ancestor Brooklyn. Casey was not happy about it but she had to give up and began preparing for pack up. At sunset, Casey and her dad had travelling by road but her brother Sam and mother by airplane. During road travel in car, Casey spent her time by reading novel Gone with the wind that she stolen from her library at high school because she knew that not would get back to New Orleans. There was also a .38 caliber Smith & Wesson revolver lying in the luggage behind the seat of a car for protection. 

The Marriage Box

It was the new but traditional environment in Brooklyn, Casey knew when her Jewish parents enrolled her in the religious school of Syrian Jewish origin and the school dressing code of Yeshiva was strict compared to her previous school. There were separate classroom for both boys and girls for study and legs of girls seen covered under longer skirts.

One day Casey was stunned to see when she was in bikini at pool party, found that men at other side there for choosing their future brides, and Casey was among in them. It was the famous spot often visited by adult men and women to choose their life partner for marriage. Casey was eighteen years of age and she wondered to see how girls were showcasing before men in bikini similar to when shopkeeper displays a product for buyers in showcase. At marriage box, Casey also met with her future husband Michael. Marriage box gave the opportunity to bring close both men and women under one place.   

The marriage relationship became in doldrums when Michael not willing to allow Casey to pursue her studies at college. The author described the story in her novel related to year 1980 about Marriage box.
